How do Canadians travellers compare to the world?

While many international markets are embracing the book-it-yourself short-getaway trend, Canadian vacationers still travel in a way that favours booking through travel agents. As reported by Travelweek’s Kathryn Folliott, a new study shows that Canadians, compared to 7 other major global travel markets including the U.S. and the UK, could be best-suited for travel agent sales. And that’s great news for the Canadian retail travel industry.

Canadian travellers vs. other markets

According to Expedia’s 2017 Multi-National Travel Trends survey, Canadians: • Book longer trips more than the international average • Vacation outside the country more often than not • Rely more heavily on outside sources for vacation advice and inspiration, like travel agents

Canada is one of eight international markets, along with the U.S., China, Japan, the UK, Germany, France and Australia, in Expedia’s Multi-National Travel Trends study.

Trips per year & travelling outside the country

According to the study Canadian take an average of 2.8 trips per year and vacation for around 8.7 days, whereas travellers in markets like the U.S. are booking more frequent (but shorter) getaways. 59% of Canadians are also more likely to travel outside their own borders, which has ranked them third in the study.

This is great for travel agents since so many made-in-Canada vacations are booked direct by Canadians without an agent’s help.

Accommodation preferences

Hotels still attract the majority of Canadian vacationers, with more than 69% stating they book hotels and resorts on their holidays. Canada’s pick-up on the alternative accommodations trend is on par with countries like the U.S. (4%) and the UK and Australia (6%).

When deciding on a destination

At least 54% of Canadians said they typically decide between two or more destinations, with 68% agreeing they need some help and inspiration. It’s the perfect sales opportunity for travel agents.

Price is top of mind

Three out of every four Canadian travellers say budget is a primary factor when researching and booking a vacation. 94% of Canadian vacationers say they look for the best deals and most value for their dollar.

What is the top trip influencer for Canadians?

Deals are even the top drivers for Canadians researching travel options on social media, with 60% – the most of any country – saying they’re most influenced by social media when they see a travel deal or promotion.

Understanding the booking behaviours of the Canadian traveller can be key for travel agencies looking to develop marketing strategies and most importantly, boost sales.
